I’m offering a Gibson SG ’62 Reissue from 1989 – one of the most respected late-80s SG reissues, built in a period when Gibson returned to early-60s construction details. This is an early pre-Historic era instrument, fully original, equipped with the sought-after Bill Lawrence HB-L / HB-R humbuckers that were factory-installed only for a short time.

It’s a lightweight, resonant and very responsive SG with a fast neck, classic slim taper profile and a deep Cherry Red finish with the natural character of late-80s nitro.

Condition

The guitar remains fully original with untouched factory wiring and no cracks, repairs or structural issues. The neck is straight, action is low and the instrument plays cleanly.

Finish:
The late-80s nitro shows natural playwear: light scratches, small dings and minor edge marks consistent with age.
There are small greenish specks/oxidation points on the body, typical for vintage Cherry Red Gibson nitro from this era. This is purely cosmetic, stable and well-known among late-80s SGs. In person it appears subtle and does not distract from the overall look, giving the guitar an authentic vintage character.

Frets: Very good condition, no flat spots or divots.
Fingerboard: Clean and healthy, no cracks or dryness.
Neck: Stable, holds adjustment properly.

Overall, the guitar presents as a well-kept 35-year-old vintage SG – honest wear, no attempts at artificial relicing.

Background & Highlights

  • 1988–1990 is a highly regarded period for SG Reissue models due to their early-60s inspired specs
  • The Bill Lawrence HB-L / HB-R set is one of the most collectible Gibson pickup pairs from the era
  • Excellent quality mahogany and wood selection compared to many later production years
  • Original brown/pink case adds strong collector value

Summary

A superb early SG ’62 Reissue from the late 1980s, fully original and equipped with legendary Bill Lawrence pickups. It plays exceptionally well, remains structurally perfect and offers the unmistakable vintage Gibson character that instruments from this period are known for.
